Intellectually and Strategically Bankrupt

Obama suggests that Gitmo provides al Qaeda with justification to attack us.  Ed Morrissey rightly points out that Gitmo was opened well after AQ had attacked us on 9/11.  In fact, all throughout the 1990s, when Bill Clinton ignored attack after attack, Gitmo did not exist or provide any excuse to attack us.  Bin Laden cited different complaints then which can be summed up as: we support Israel and we don’t submit to his brand of Islam.

With regard to Obama’s argument that Gitmo should be closed in order to appease AQ, Ed is spot-on when he writes:

It’s an asinine justification, one that is both intellectually and strategically bankrupt.  If Gitmo doesn’t serve our national-security purposes, then make that argument outside of the rantings of lunatic terrorists as a basis for policy.  If Obama can’t do that, then perhaps it’s time to move on from the Gitmo debate altogether and proceed with the military tribunals and trials that his administration interrupted and can’t seem to get back on track.

State Dept: Former Gitmo Detainee Led Terror Cell in Jordan

Releasing the enemy so he can attack us again… just one more instance of treating terrorism as criminal conduct instead of a war.

(LWJ)- A former Guantanamo detainee named Usama Abu Kabir led a terror cell in Jordan that was broken up in 2009, according to a new report by the US State Department. On Thursday, the State Department released its Country Reports on Terrorism for 2009. “In April [2009],” the report notes, “four men were arrested and charged with plotting attacks in Israel in retaliation for the Israeli incursion into Gaza.” Kabir was one of the four. A fifth member of the cell was arrested in May 2009.
